Unbeaten Vikings take down No. 2 Treynor

Led by Raydden Grobe’s 37 points, sixth-ranked AHSTW boys build 19-point lead, hold on to win 76-73

TREYNOR (Dec. 15) -- The 2020 football season was a tough one for AHSTW, plagued by three cancellations and ending with a 2-3 record.
So far in boys basketball, the Vikings are making up for lost time.
Led by Raydden Grobe’s four first-half threes and career-high 37 points, sixth-ranked AHSTW built a 19-point third quarter lead, then narrowly held off Treynor’s ferocious comeback in the final 12 minutes to beat the second-ranked Cardinals on the road, 76-73, Tuesday night.
The game ended on a long three-point miss by Treynor senior Tim Timmerman and Viking sophomore Kyle Sternberg’s rebound just ahead of the final buzzer.
Timmerman’s fifth trey of the night had made it 75-73 with :17.8 remaining, but his final two attempts were off the mark and Sternberg’s free throw restored the margin to three with :06 left.
AHSTW picked up its first win on Treynor’s home floor since February of 2017 and improved its current record to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the Western Iowa Conference - tied with Underwood for first place. The Cardinals slipped to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the WIC.
Vikings’ head coach G.G. Harris called the victory a big one for his still-young squad - the starting five consisting of a junior, three sophomores and a freshman - noting that the ball bounced Treynor’s way “in one way, shape or form” a lot during the second half.
“We’re ready to rock. We’re still hungry,” Harris said. “Viking Basketball and things like that mean a lot to these kids. It means a lot to me and it means a lot to this group. The work that we put in every day, we want it to mean something, so a victory like this absolutely means a lot.”
Grobe, who seemed to score from about every spot on the floor Tuesday - four first-half treys, 7-of-8 fourth quarter free throws, pull-up jumpers, drives, fast breaks, etc. - chose to talk about the team first after the game.
“Everyone was just ready to play together. We were all itching to get back out here after the weekend,” he said. “We all just really wanted to win, so we all (went) out there and competed.”
Sternberg and sophomore Brayden Lund both made one three-pointer and scored crucial baskets along the way, finishing with 16 points apiece. Freshman Nick Denning hit back-to-back baseline jumpers in the second quarter for his four points and sophomore guard Cole Scheffler added three.
Treynor, which shot 56 percent in defeat, was led by three 20-point seniors in Noah James (21), Timmerman (20) and Sid Schaaf (20).
