Trojans outlast HCHS in five-setter
ATLANTIC (Sept. 16) -- Despite finishing with more aces, kills and digs than Atlantic, Harlan Community came up just short in a five-set Hawkeye Ten volleyball match on Thursday night.
Alternating set wins, the Trojans prevailed 25-23, 14-25, 25-22, 19-25, 16-14, beating HCHS for the first time since 2010.
The Cyclones outscored Atlantic by 10 points overall but couldn’t win the close ones, falling to 10-8 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Atlantic improved to 11-7 overall and 2-1 in the Hawkeye Ten.
Harlan’s biggest advantage vs. Atlantic came in the serving department as the Cyclones served 89 percent with 15 aces and the Trojans finished at 85 percent with just five aces. Both squads had double-digit service errors.
HCHS senior Zophi Hendricks (24-of-29) led all players with 11 aces, more than doubling her season total, while Madison Kjergaard was 23-of-23 and Laney Wegner 16-of-17 - both with one ace.
Hendricks also had a big night at the net, slamming 20 kills with an efficiency of .312.
