Treynor ends Vikings’ season, 15-0

Class 2A District Baseball

CLARINDA (July 11) -- AHSTW’s baseball season ended in disappointing fashion Saturday afternoon with a 15-0, four-inning loss to Treynor in the first round of Class 2A district tournament play.
The Cardinals led 3-0 after two innings, then turned the game into a rout by scoring five runs in the third and seven more (six unearned) in the fourth as the Vikings committed four errors.
The Vikings (5-5) managed just two singles in four innings off Cardinal senior Nate McCombs, who walked none and struck out four. Joey Cunningham and Joel Sampson had the Viking hits and Cunningham was also hit-by-pitch.
Clayton Akers (1-3) took the loss on the mound, allowing seven hits and seven earned runs in two and two-thirds innings. Sam Porter surrendered three hits and seven runs (one earned) in the final inning and a third, striking out two. Akers and Porter combined to issue three walks and also hit four batters.
Will Halverson led the Cardinals’ 10-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
AHSTW must say goodbye to eight seniors on the roster, many of whom were multi-year starters. The list includes: Cunningham, Sampson, Jaedan Rasmussen, Porter, Brody Langer, Akers, Joey Goins and Lucas Young.
“I want to thank them and their parents for their dedication to AHSTW baseball and the school,” stated head coach Jason Holst. “We wish our senior players the best of luck in the next chapter of their lives.”
