Three HCHS swimmers part of Lynx state qualifier

JOHNSTON (Nov. 7) -- Three swimmers from Harlan Community were part of a history-making day for the Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln girls swim team last Saturday at the regional meet in Johnston.
HCHS senior Aubri Smith (leadoff leg) and sophomores Aurora Miller (third leg) and Elaina Vrchoticky (anchor), joined forces with Claire Crilly of Underwood to place fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Their regional time of 3:53.57 was good enough to secure an at-large qualifier spot for the Girls State Swimming & Diving Meet November 13-14 at Marshalltown.
The 400 free relay squad cut an impressive 20 seconds off their previous season best and broke the AL school record (from 1992) by 1.5 seconds, becoming the Lynx’s first state qualifiers since 2006.
Abraham Lincoln, also known as the CB Swim Team, placed fifth as a team in the regional with 151 points. The squad consists of swimmers from Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Harlan Community, Woodbine and Underwood.
The Lynx nearly had a second state qualifier as the 200 freestyle relay team of Vrchoticky, Crilly, Jocelyn Miller (AL) and Aurora Miller missed the state cut-off by .13 of a second, placing fourth at the regional meet in 1:45.7. They broke the 1994 school record and dropped four seconds off this year’s season-best time.
