Tela Schwery will continue cheerleading at Midland

Senior Tela Schwery has signed a Letter of Intent to be a cheerleader at Midland University, a private university in Fremont, Neb. following the conclusion of high school.

“I’m very excited to go cheer in college,” Schwery said. “It’s always been my dream to cheer with a great coach and a great team.”

Schwery started cheering her junior season, for head coach Shannon Ferry, who she maintains a strong relationship with, and has helped her a lot along the way.

“She [Ferry] means a lot,” she said. “She’s been my tumbling coach since forever and she actually convinced me to join cheer my junior year and I love it, so she means a lot.”

Since joining the team during the previous school year, Schwery described her passion and love for the sport.

“The hard work and the dedication and just to have a lot of fun stunting and cheering, it’s always a lot of fun,” Schwery added.

Like many students she had several colleges choices in front of her. Schwery talked about what stood out with Midland and why she ultimately chose them.

“Their college offers a lot,” she added. “Their cheer team is pretty good and the coach is great, the team is great.”

During her college days, Schwery will be coached by Kayla Rojas, who joined Schwery and her family at the signing, while bringing a trophy and some rings.

Schwery’s family was in attendance at the signing, which included her mom, Joi, her dad, Paul, her two brothers, Jesse and Nolan and her sister, Katherine.

“They’ve given me so much support,” Schwery said. “They mean a lot. They have pushed me through the whole cheer season and I’m excited to go into college now.”
