T-C knocks off Lady Vikes in regional opener
AVOCA (July 7) -- The AHSTW softball team saw its season come to a jarring end last Wednesday as conference rival Tri-Center knocked off the Lady Vikes 3-1 in a Class 2A regional quarterfinal.
AHSTW, which finished 15-13, had beaten T-C by scores of 19-1 and 4-3 during the regular season, but couldn’t complete the postseason trifecta.
The 7-18 Trojans turned two double plays on the night and got a four-hitter from senior pitcher Faith McPhillips, who overcame five walks and a hit batter.
Senior Kailey Jones countered with a five-hitter for the Lady Vikes, allowing just one earned run, striking out six and hitting two.
Tri-Center scored first in the top of the fifth when Mollie Nelson was hit-by-pitch and eventually scored on a sacrifice bunt.
AHSTW answered with the tying run in the bottom of the fifth as eighth-grader Grayson Gettler doubled and scored on an error.
The Trojans scored their winning runs in the top of the seventh, starting with singles by Pearl Huddle and Nelson. After a ground ball advanced the runners, Huddle scored on a passed ball; then a throw to third got past the infielder and Nelson raced home to make it 3-1.
The Lady Vikes got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but three pop flies ended the game.
Jones, Natalie Hagadon and Sienna Christian all hit singles on the night for AHSTW while Graycen Partlow stole two bases.
The Lady Vikes will lose just one senior off the roster in Jones, who led the team with eight pitching wins and batted .294.
Tri-Center lost to ninth-ranked Underwood 11-2 in Friday’s Region 2 semifinal.
