Spartans volleyball eliminated by Cougars

“I wish I had more years to work with the seniors. They are such a good group of girls. We have some offseason work to do, but I just appreciate all of the girls.” -Derek Reischauer, Spartans Head Volleyball Coach

Monday on the road, the Exira-EHK Spartans started its playoff journey against the CAM Cougars in hopes of making a deep run, but came up short losing three straight sets; 25-16, 25-8 and 25-14.

The Spartans finished its season 11-22, losing the final two matches. Head Coach Derek Reischauer spoke to his team following the contest.

“I told them I have never been good at “end of season” speeches, how much I appreciated working with them, and how I am already looking forward to next season,” he said. “I wish I had more years to work with the seniors. They are such a good group of girls. We have some offseason work to do, but I just appreciate all of the girls.”

Throughout the night, the girls were unable to find a groove to turn the tables on the Cougars. However, these games don’t reflect on the efforts shown throughout the course of the season.

Sophomore Hailey Bieker led the way Monday with seven digs, Senior Quinn Grubbs had six assists and one serve ace, and Senior Shay Burmeister led in kills.

“They got thrown into the thick of things early in the season and had to try to grow up in a hurry,” Reischauer said. “Looking at our seniors, all of their stats improved season over season, so that is encouraging that we are doing something right, even though the record may not reflect it.”

Four seniors who won’t be returning next year are Grubbs, Burmeister, MaKenna Larson and Makenzie Riley, but Reischauer expects the underclassmen to be back on the court, as well as some new faces.

“We look to have a pretty young team next year,” Reischauer added. “I expect everyone to return and hopefully we can get some other student athletes who did not go out this season. We have some current eighth graders who we will expect to contribute early, if they prove they can, as well.”
