Spartans have frustrating night against the Cougars

Thursday at home, The Exira-EHK varsity volleyball team had a rough night against the CAM Cougars, dropping all three matches. With the losses, it moves their overall record to 4-9 on the season.

The students of Exira-EHK high school came out energetic as they were rocking Hawaiian shirts and swim gear hoping to see their Spartans get some wins over CAM.

The Spartans throughout the night were getting good looks and fighting hard, but in the end it just didn’t work out, as the Cougars dominated.

“We told them we thought the overall floor play was pretty good, the passing was pretty good, we just need to finish on offense and we are highly confident we will do that in the future,” said Head Coach Derek Reischauer. “Chins up, smiles on and let's go get some wins on Saturday.”

Two really stood out as they saved a lot of potential points on the night, seniors Quinn Grubbs and Shay Burmeister.

“We are really pleased with all our girls in the digging facet of the game.” Reischauer said. “Shay and Quinn do a great job, but they aren't the only ones.”

Playing at the net throughout the course of each game was a struggle for the Spartans, as the Cougars were very dominant there. Junior Hannah Nelson spent a lot of time up at the net for the Spartans fighting hard and trying to prevent points, but it wasn’t playing in her favor.

“She [Hannah] is playing a role that she maybe doesn't have a whole lot of experience with in past seasons,” he said. “All of our girls need to be a little more aggressive with their hands at the net, and as a coach I need to find more time to work on our blocking, but I have confidence in Hannah and all our girls. We are not done improving.”

The girls won’t have much time to rest as Saturday they will be on the road at AC/GC High School for a tournament, where they will be one of eight teams competing.

“We believe we have a pretty good team that can compete with a lot of teams,” Reischauer added. “We have had matches where we have been solid in some areas, but not so solid in others and it seems like it has been a different facet in different matches.”
