Spartans drop fifth consecutive to Tigers

The Exira-EHK Spartans were hoping to snap their losing streak going into Monday’s game, but failed to do so as Woodbine Tigers senior Cory Bantam had 19 strikeouts en route to a complete game shutout, 6-0.

Junior Trey Petersen got the ball for the Spartans and pitched 5.2 innings while surrendering a 3-run home run off the bat of Bantam.

“He had 19 strikeouts tonight,” said Spartans Head Baseball Coach Tom Petersen. “He threw well. He’s a good pitcher.”

With this loss, it marks the fifth consecutive for the Spartans. Petersen did highlight some positives he sees with this team despite a bump in the road.

“Other than one game we’ve played, we’ve been there,” he said. “It’s games that were there, but you got to figure out a way to finish. Going forward, we have three more games and do what you can. You got to be playing your best ball by the time July 2nd rolls around.”

The Spartans will have to shake off this loss quickly as the ACGC Chargers, 7-12, come into town to play them Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.

“We just got to be able to put the ball in play,” he added. “When you’re not making the opposition have to make plays, it makes it difficult.”
