Spartan softball team starts 5-0
KIMBALLTON (May 28) -- Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 4-4 tie and held off Coon Rapids-Bayard 7-4 in Rolling Valley Conference softball action here Friday.
The 12th-ranked (Class 1A) Spartans capped a 5-0 opening week of the season, including two wins inside the RVC, while the Crusaders dropped to 1-2.
Exira-EHK fell behind 2-1 in the top of the third and 4-3 in the fourth but was able to answer both times before posting its three-run sixth.
Spartan junior Macy Emgarten outdueled Emma Hart of CR-B in a 95-pitch, complete-game effort. She allowed seven hits and four earned runs, issued no walks and struck out 10 as her defense played error-free softball.
Exira-EHK finished with 11 hits offensively, including two apiece by Emgarten, Shay Burmeister and Alisa Partridge. Emgarten had a double among her two hits and finished with two RBI. Gemini Goodwin also hit a double and Mollie Rasmussen had a single, a sac fly and two RBI. Burmeister led the team with three runs scored.
Hart helped her own cause for the Crusaders with two singles and three RBI while Cassidy Baker added two hits as well.
