Southwest Valley tops Vikings 14-12

AVOCA (Sept. 10) -- The AHSTW football team dropped to 0-2 in Class A, District 7 (1-2 overall) following Friday’s hard-fought 14-12 home loss to Southwest Valley.
Both teams scored two touchdowns on the night but the Vikings were unable to convert their PAT attempts, missing an extra point in the second quarter and a two-point try with 3:52 left in the game. AHSTW also had a 35-yard field goal fall just short in the first half.
Leading by two with more than three minutes left, the visiting Timberwolves were able to pick up two first downs and run out the clock, improving to 2-0 in district play and 2-1 overall.
Southwest Valley’s ball-control offense netted 301 yards on 41 carries while passing for 21 yards. Quarterback Brendan Knapp was the main offensive cog, rushing the ball 22 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns. Cade Meyers added 81 yards on eight attempts.
Knapp put the Timberwolves on the board with 4:47 left in the first quarter, scoring from two yards out. He scored again late in the third on a 28-yard scamper around left end to make it 14-6.
AHSTW’s first touchdown occurred in the second quarter when quarterback Kyle Sternberg had the ball jarred loose on the tail end of a 17-yard run; however, Cole Scheffler was in the right place at the right time to grab the fumble in mid-air and score the TD.
The Vikings made it close with a 50-yard drive in the fourth quarter. A 20-yard run by Sternberg turned into a 35-yard play when a penalty was tacked on and Sternberg’s five-yard TD run cut the margin to 14-12.
AHSTW’s next game is Friday night at Mount Ayr (1-2).
