Sonderman sets school record as Cyclone girls win home meet
HARLAN (Sept. 25) -- The Harlan Community cross country girls picked a great spot for their second team title of the season on Saturday morning, capping Homecoming week with an 11-point Cyclone Invite victory over rival Glenwood.
Paced by freshman Lindsey Sonderman’s first-place, school-record time of 19:21, the Cyclone girls posted a winning score of 51 to hold off the second-place Rams (62) and third-place Clarinda (74) at the Harlan Golf and Country Club. The AHSTW girls finished 10th with a 269 and the Cyclone boys came in seventh with a 161.
HCHS, ranked 10th in Class 3A, had finished behind No. 17 Glenwood in three previous meets this season as well as in last year’s Cyclone Invite - always by eight points or less. That trend changed Saturday as five Cyclone girls placed in the top 17. The Rams had five in the top 20, but none higher than seventh.
HCHS was led by Sonderman in first, senior Kaia Bieker in fourth, Ellie Gross (13th), Taylor Bieker (16th) and Jenna Gessert (17th).
“You couldn’t ask for much more,” said Cyclone coach Doug Renkly of the team and individual girls championships. “I’m very proud of this group. It’s a great group to be with and they work very hard, so they got what they deserved.”
Sonderman (ranked 7th in 3A) hustled to the head of the pack from the start and never looked back, continuing to pull away from the top contenders. Her official time of 19:21.65 broke the Cyclone girls’ previous five-kilometer school record - set by Kaia Bieker three years ago at Denison - by more than 10 seconds. High school girls have only run the 5K distance since 2015.
“I really enjoyed this course and the [cool] temperature,” Sonderman said. “Towards the last mile I got a little bit of a side ache but it wasn’t too bad and I just tried to keep pushing and do as well as I could.
“I’m really glad that I could win this one, especially because it’s home. I just feel like if people are coming from around the area I should try to give them some excitement and I feel like that’s what I did."
Kaia Bieker’s fourth-place time of 20:14.74 was her second-best of the year as she continues to look stronger on the course. Bieker battled knee soreness during the summer, which limited her training and preseason workouts.
HCHS senior Tyler Shelton did not start out in the top five, but worked his way up the ladder and split two runners ahead of him in the last mile to place fourth in his Cyclone Invite debut with a time of 17:08.88. Ian Shelton finished 24th in 18:20, Kaiden Milliken was 29th and Joseph Bragg was 37th.
The AHSTW girls were led by Rylie Knop in 26th place while Caleb Hatch finished 47th for the boys.
