Sonderman, Cyclone girls keep on winning

Fifth meet title for Sonderman, team’s fourth championship at Atlantic Invite

ATLANTIC (Oct. 7) -- Lindsey Sonderman and the Harlan Community girls cross country team continue to respond each time the IATC moves them up a notch in the Class 3A state rankings.
Sonderman, a freshman, claimed her fifth individual meet title of the year and the Cyclone girls won their fourth team championship at Thursday’s Atlantic Invite at the Nishna Hills Golf Club.
Ranked sixth in Class 3A, HCHS placed five runners in the top 18 and easily outscored 12th-ranked Glenwood, 52-75, for first place. Clarinda, ranked 10th in 2A, took third with a score of 98.
The HCHS boys, competing without four varsity regulars, finished last (16th) with a 417, led by Kaiden Milliken in 65th place. ADM, rated ninth in 3A, won the boys team title by a 68-92 margin over top-ranked (1A) Earlham, which had the top two individual finishers.
Sonderman took over the girls’ five-kilometer lead about halfway through the race and outlasted ADM’s Geneva Timmerman by 11 seconds (19:42 to 19:53) in a battle of top five-ranked individuals in 3A. Sonderman was ranked fifth last week and Timmerman was fourth.
HCHS senior Kaia Bieker, rated 15th, placed third over two other ranked harriers in 20:06. The next three Cyclone girls - Kayla Anderson, Ellie Gross and Taylor Bieker - occupied the 16-17-18 spots to round out the team score.
Anderson was competing in just her third varsity race and has made tremendous strides since the beginning of the season, according to head coach Doug Renkly.
