Shelton’s win helps Cyclone boys defend team title at Tri-Center

HCHS girls place second to Lo-Ma

NEOLA (Sept. 21) -- Tyler Shelton picked up his second cross country win of the season and three other Harlan Community runners placed in the top 12 Tuesday as the Cyclone boys defended last year’s team title at the Tri-Center Invitational.
HCHS scored a first-place 48 to outlast a pair of Class 1A state-ranked teams in No. 17 Missouri Valley (58) and No. 11 Woodbine (61) at Quail Run Golf Course.
The Cyclones had placed seven points and two spots behind Mo. Valley earlier this month at the Council Bluffs A.L. Invite.
“In looking at their most recent races, we were able to pinpoint a couple gaps that we wanted to take advantage of,” said HCHS coach Doug Renkly of the Big Reds. “Our boys ran an outstanding and gutsy race. It was great to see them lean in, stay tough, and execute the game plan on a very challenging and hilly course.”
The Cyclone girls, who were led by third and fourth-place finishes from Lindsey Sonderman and Kaia Bieker, placed second as a team to Logan-Magnolia. The 2nd-ranked (1A) Panthers used a one-two finish by the sister combo of Courtney Sporrer and Madison Sporrer to edge the 10th-ranked (3A) Cyclones by a 32-36 margin.
Tri-Center placed third with a score of 92, AHSTW was fifth (130) and Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton came in seventh (170).
