Schwery signs LOI at Midland for football

HCHS Senior Nolan Schwery has signed a football Letter of Intent at Midland University.
“I’m just really excited and ready to start playing football again,” he said.
During the signing at Midland, Schwery’s mom and dad, Joi and Paul, were in attendance, along with his older sister, Tela.
“They give me a lot of support,” Schwery said. “My parents don’t push me as much, but it’s mainly my brother who pushes me to be the best person I can. Two of my brothers have been in my shoes going to do college wrestling.”
With multiple choices in front of him, Schwery talked about what made him settle on Midland University.
“I just basically looked at what schools offered what stuff football wise, and Midland felt like home to me,” he said.
This season, Midland finished with a 6-5 overall record with wins against Clarke, Dakota Wesleyan, Waldorf, Briar Cliff, Hastings, and Doane. Schwery plans to major in education during his time there.
During his football career with the Cyclones, Schwery was the punter/kicker his junior and senior season. He credited a former teammate and current Dordt Defender, along with his coaching staff who helped him along the way.
“Some of my teammates, like Stephen Leinen helped me along the way,” Schwery said. “He basically taught me a lot of the stuff I know how to kick and how to punt. It’ll be exciting to kick against him next year this coming fall. All my teammates and coaches have helped me out along the way.”
He talked about fond memories he has from his time playing Cyclone football.
“Mainly it was winning state my freshman and sophomore year, and then kicking the game-winning field goals against Glenwood and Nevada, last year and this year,” Schwery added.
Before his senior season concludes, Schwery will play soccer for the Cyclones. Regardless of how the rest of his high school journey plays out, he will forever be grateful for his time at HCHS.
“I just want to thank everybody that helped me along the way with my teammates, my coaches,” he said. “What my coaches have taught me throughout my high school career in football and soccer, just helping me be the best I can at that next level.”
