Powers set to continue golfing at Wayne State

"My parents are really proud of me. My aunts and uncles, my niece and nephews and my sisters always come and watch me. I always have a really big fanbase and they’ve supported me over the years, and I’m really grateful for that." -Kylie Powers, 2023 IKM-Manning Graduate

Kylie Powers, a 2023 graduate from IKM-Manning High School and a multi-sport student athlete will continue her golfing career at Wayne State College in Lincoln, Neb.

“It definitely means a lot to me because my sister, Ashley Darling, golfed at Northwest Missouri State and my sister, Emily Powers, is currently golfing at Buena Vista University, so to continue that legacy, it really means a lot,” Powers said.

Powers had multiple college choices in front of her, but talked about why she chose Wayne State.

“I had it down to three,” she said. “I had Northwest Missouri State in mind, then I had Morningside and Wayne State. Ultimately, Wayne State gave me the best offer and they have a really nice facility, and they got a new coach, who I absolutely love and it’s just a great place.”

The love for the game started at a young age for Powers, having relatives who golfed before her.

“I grew up on the Denison Golf Course, so I’ve been golfing basically all my life starting around 6-years-old,” she added. “My older sisters golfed and my dad used to golf, so it’s really been a big golfing family.”

During her time at IKM-Manning, Powers was coached three out of four years by Kevin Lahndorf, with her freshman season getting cut short due to COVID-19.

Powers expressed gratitude towards Lahndorf for everything he’s done for her, as well as the relationship they maintain.

“He’s definitely a great coach,” she said. “He’s helped me for the past three years and we made it to state the past three seasons. I’ve known him for the past five years now and he’s just a really great guy.”

Powers has fond memories during her three seasons of golfing for the Wolves.

“Making it to state and having my team come and watch me the past three years,” she added. “It’s really meant a lot to me.”

Powers’ new golf coach will be Nick Swaney. She had already met him along with one of her new teammates.

“I went up there for a visit and he showed me all of the facilities,” Powers said. “We went out for lunch and he’s just a really good guy. I only got to meet one of the other teammates and she’s actually from Iowa, too. Her name is Saffire and she’s super nice.”

Powers comes from a strong family background that has given her support in her endeavors.

“My parents are really proud of me,” she said. “My aunts and uncles, my niece and nephews and my sisters always come and watch me. I always have a really big fanbase and they’ve supported me over the years, and I’m really grateful for that.”

Powers also played Volleyball during her time with IKM-Manning. During her senior season, she led the Wolves in kills with 85. Playing sports has taught Powers many life lessons.

“It’s definitely taught me that I have to be patient, and being involved in a team really goes a long way,” she added.
