Passing records fall as Cyclones top Tigers 58-30

Kasperbauer throws for 432 yards, seven touchdowns; HCHS wins big despite 145 penalty yards at ADM

ADEL (Oct. 8) -- On a night full of good, bad and ugly, Harlan Community quarterback Teagon Kasperbauer was the top gunslinger in Adel.
Kasperbauer set a pair of single-game school records on Friday, passing for 432 yards and seven touchdowns as the top-ranked (3A) Cyclones jumped out to a 24-0 lead and outscored Adel-DeSoto-Minburn 58-30 in a District 6 shootout for sole possession of first place.
Kasperbauer’s seven TD passes accounted for 261 of his yards and broke Joel Osborn’s record of six scoring tosses accomplished twice in 2003. The previous single-game mark of 416 passing yards was set by Preston Mulligan in 2018 vs. Glenwood.
The Cyclones improved to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in district play while No. 9 ADM dropped to 5-2 and 2-1, respectively.
“I tell you what - it’s an honor,” Kasperbauer said. “We’ve got some athletes out there... Joey, Aidan, Frame - they’re all great receivers. Birch - he’s awesome too,” Kasperbauer said. “The line stepped up big. They gave me plenty of time to make plays and rely on my receivers.”
HCHS seniors Joey Moser (six catches, 146 yards) and Connor Frame (4-114), as well as junior Aidan Hall (2-114), all surpassed 100 yards receiving as vertical deep routes were utilized often against the Tigers’ outmatched secondary.
It was probably only a matter of time until Kasperbauer had a night such as this. In the previous two games combined, he completed 12-of-15 passes for 402 yards in less than four quarters on the field. Playing the whole game on Friday, he finished 15-of-25 (no interceptions) for an average of 28.8 yards per completion. And the passing total could have been higher if not for a handful of drops.
The seven touchdown passes covered 11, 72 and 3 yards to Frame, 54 and 60 yards to Hall, 39 yards to Moser and 22 yards to Birch.
But it wasn’t all good times and touchdown celebrations for the Cyclones.
ADM’s potent offense was able to hit at least six plays for 15 yards or more and its 30 points were the most allowed by Harlan this season. The Tigers also had a 66-yard kickoff return and blocked an extra point kick on special teams.
The biggest area of consternation for HCHS head coach Todd Bladt, though, was his team’s 14 penalties for 145 yards. A few of the infractions were highly questionable - including three pass interference calls - but HCHS was also flagged for two dead ball unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and several pre-snap penalties.
By the end, a frustrated Bladt was glad to see the clock hit 0:00, noting that the Cyclones need to play cleaner and more disciplined football.
“We had [14] penalties... You can disagree with them or whatever, but they happened and you’ve got to move on and get by it," he said. I don’t think our guys did a very good job of moving on and just playing football.
“We did some good things, but we’re going to have to get better. This team (has) got eyes on the big prize, and if you want that we’re going to have to play a lot better than we did tonight."
