Markham shines for Central

PELLA -- Former Atlantic standout Sam Markham was recently named first-team All-Iowa Conference following a record-breaking season for the Central College football team.
Markham, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound receiver for the Dutch, is the grandson of Betty Markham, Harlan, and the son of Dr. Mark and Pat Markham of Atlantic. Mark Markham is still a single-season school record holder at Harlan Community, tied for the most interceptions in a regular season with seven in 1970.
Additional Harlan relatives to Sam Markham include two uncles, Dr. Scott Markham and Dr. Phil Markham, and aunt Michelle (Steve) Mores, as well as cousin Katy (Randy) Heese of Earling.
Markham was one of eight Central players named first-team all-conference after the Dutch finished 8-2 overall and 6-2 in league play, tied for second place with Dubuque. The team set school records for total yards per game (535.3) and passing yards per game (314.5) in a season, surpassing both of the previous marks by at least 70 yards.
Markham was a huge part of Central’s potent attack, setting single-season school records with 105 receptions and 1,215 receiving yards and tying the school mark with 12 touchdown catches. His 10.5 receptions per game led all of NCAA Division III.
