Lynx relay improves school record time at state

HCHS swimmers Smith, Miller and Vrchoticky help AL’s 400 freestyle relay place 26th out of 32 qualifiers

MARSHALLTOWN (Nov. 14) -- Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of Aubri Smith, Claire Crilly, Aurora Miller and Elaina Vrchoticky rebroke their school record and placed above their seed at the 2020 Girls State Swimming and Diving Meet held November 13-14 at the Marshalltown YMCA/YWCA.
Smith, a senior, and sophomores Miller and Vrchoticky are all Harlan Community High School students while Crilly attends Underwood. The Lynx are coached by Harlan native Logan Maxwell.
The 400 freestyle relay quartet, AL’s first state qualifier since 2006, finished 26th out of 31 teams last Saturday with a school-record time of 3:50.3. One week earlier at regionals, they qualified 31st out of 32 teams with a time of 3:53.57 that broke a 28-year-old school record and was 20 seconds faster than this season’s previous best time.
“The girls had an amazing day,” Maxwell said. “We saw talent from girls around Iowa who will be competing in the Olympic trials and likely the Olympic as teenagers next summer. It was a great experience for our girls to push those races aside, focus on them, and break the school record for the second weekend in a row by another three seconds, upsetting five teams in the process.”
