Local schools announce revised 2020 football schedules
AREA (July 30) -- The 2020 football schedules for the area’s four high school teams have been revised and released for the upcoming fall season.
Changes were necessitated following last week’s move by the Iowa High School Athletic Association to reduce this year’s regular season to seven weeks (from the previous standard of nine) and conduct six rounds of playoffs with every team qualifying for the postseason.
The 2020 playoffs will now start on Friday, October 16 and conclude with the state championship games at the UNI-Dome November 20-21.
The biggest change for area 11-player football teams Harlan Community, AHSTW and IKM-Manning involved the non-district portion of the schedule, which was cut from four games to two. The five-game district schedule remains the same but was moved up two weeks.
HCHS will no longer play Thomas Jefferson, ADM, Sergeant Bluff-Luton or Spencer to start the season. The Cyclones will now host Grinnell in Week 1 (Aug. 28) and travel to Pella in Week 2 (Sept. 4).
AHSTW’s first two games remain the same - home vs. Shenandoah Week 1 and at Missouri Valley Week 2. The Vikings will no longer play Underwood or IKM-M.
IKM-Manning will still open the season at home vs. Tri-Center and will now play at Southeast Valley (Gowrie) in Week 2. Non-district contests against ACGC, East Sac County and AHSTW have been cancelled.
Exira-EHK, which plays seven district games in 8-Player Football, will face those same seven opponents two weeks earlier on the schedule. Non-district games against Newell-Fonda and Kingsley-Pierson have been cancelled.
