Lady Vikes end two decades of Treynor frustration

AVOCA (Jan. 7) -- For the first time in nearly two decades, AHSTW beat Treynor in girls basketball Tuesday night... and it wasn’t close.
The 12th-ranked (2A) Lady Vikes bolted out to a 31-7 halftime lead and held off several Cardinal rallies the rest of the way to finish with a 48-39 victory. It is believed to be the Lady Vikes’ first girls basketball win over Treynor since the 2001-2002 season.
Senior Kinsey Scheffler hit 7-of-8 shots and scored a game-high 18 points for AHSTW, which improved to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the Western Iowa Conference, tied for first place with IKM-Manning and Audubon.
The Cardinals, who were led by Mandy Stogdill’s 10 points and eight from Brooklynn Currin, dropped to 3-6 overall and 3-4 in the WIC just one year after winning the 2A state title.
AHSTW’s five starters scored all the points Tuesday. Kailey Jones just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds, Claire Harris scored eight points, Claire Denning had seven points and five assists and Julia Kock added six. Kock, Denning and Harris all hit two three-pointers.
The Lady Vikes overcame 17 turnovers, some of which occurred down the stretch with reserve players against some Treynor starters still in the game. With 2:28 to go, AHSTW was still leading by nearly 20 points.
