Kuemper answers Cyclone challenge in H-10 sweep

HCHS suffers first conference loss

HARLAN (Sept. 14) -- No matter how many times Harlan Community challenged with a run Tuesday night, Kuemper Catholic always seemed to keep the Cyclone volleyball team at arm’s length on the scoreboard.
Ranked 12th in Class 2A, the Knights finished well in all three sets to sweep HCHS 25-22, 25-21, 25-18 in a competitive Hawkeye Ten Conference battle.
Just three days after beating the Cyclones 21-14, 21-15 in the South Central Calhoun Tournament, Kuemper had a tougher time in the rematch but found a way to win behind the hitting trio of Sophie Badding (12 kills), Kenzie Schon (11 kills) and Frannie Glynn (9 kills).
The Knights finished with 12 more team kills (41-29) than HCHS, improving to 12-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The Cyclones fell to 10-7 overall and 2-1 in the H-10.
“They are just a pretty consistent team, whether that be in the back row or the front row,” said first-year HCHS head coach Elle Crees of Kuemper. “They’re not going to let a lot of balls drop, and their goal is to put the ball to the floor. They are always good and they do have that height and good coaching.”
Crees added: “We’d find that fire and it just felt like we couldn’t kick it in to finish. Lot of things to work on. It was a good competitive game."
The Cyclones rarely led Tuesday but were almost always threatening. They fell behind 5-1 at the start of set one, rallied to take a 7-6 lead, then trailed 14-8 before rattling off six straight points. It was during that stretch when Claire Schmitz served the team’s only two aces of the night.
HCHS took one final lead (16-15) following kills by Lauren McLaughlin and Zophi Hendricks and later tied the score at 20-20, but couldn’t get over the hump.
The Cyclones led just once in set two (at 1-0) and were unable to overcome a 14-8 deficit despite cutting the margin to a point at 18-17.
Set three saw Kuemper build an early 11-5 advantage. HCHS clawed back to force a 13-all tie but the Knights pulled away down the stretch to win 25-18 and closed out the match on senior Kamryn Venner’s seventh kill.
