IHSAA releases 2021-22 football districts

STATE (March 12) -- The Iowa High School Athletic Association released its district football assignments on Friday for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Harlan Community will be one of six teams in District 6 of Class 3A, which is now the third-largest class in the state.
AHSTW (District 7) and IKM-Manning (District 8) will both remain in Class A while Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton will compete in 8-Player, District 10.
The biggest change made for the next two-year cycle is the addition of a seventh classification - approved in January by the IHSAA Board of Control - to reduce the disparity in enrollment in the state’s largest class of football.
The new Class 5A, along with the 4A and 3A divisions, will include just 36 teams with 16 qualifying for the playoffs following Week 9.
In classes 2A, 1A, A and 8-Player, which all include 48 to 72 teams, there will be 32 playoff qualifiers per class and the regular season will last just eight weeks. Teams that do not qualify for the playoffs will have an opportunity to schedule a ninth game.
Harlan Community, last year’s Class 3A runner-up, will compete against ADM, Atlantic, Creston, Knoxville and Saydel in District 6. The 16 playoff qualifiers will include the top two teams from each district, along with four at-large teams determined by the RPI system.
AHSTW’s Class A, District 7 opponents will be Earlham, Mount Ayr, Riverside, Sidney, Southwest Iowa and St. Albert.
IKM-Manning’s District 8 foes include Lawton-Bronson, Logan-Magnolia, Missouri Valley, Tri-Center, Westwood and Woodbury Central.
There will be 56 teams in Class A and the 32 playoff qualifiers will consist of the top four teams per district.
Exira-EHK’s 8-Player, District 10 will also include Audubon, Boyer Valley, CAM, Coon Rapids-Bayard, West Harrison and Woodbine.
The 8-Player class will feature 72 teams and the 32 playoff qualifiers will include the top three teams from each district, along with two at-large qualifiers.
The 2021 regular season will begin the weekend of August 26-28 and playoff rounds will start October 22 and 29. The IHSAA will release each team’s schedule in April.
