HCHS wrestlers sweep Kuemper quad, now 6-2 in H-10

AHSTW finishes 0-3 on the day

CARROLL (Jan. 21) -- Eight Harlan Community wrestlers went 3-0 on the night as the Cyclones swept Thursday’s quad at Kuemper Catholic.
HCHS picked up Hawkeye Ten wins over Kuemper (60-10) and Red Oak (60-18) while also beating AHSTW (63-12), improving to 14-6 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
AHSTW, which had just six wrestlers competing, finished 0-3 in the meet and is now 11-4 in duals. The Vikings won by pin in all three of their matches vs. Red Oak but came up on the short end of a 42-36 decision. They also lost to Kuemper 48-15.
The host Knights (11-9, 3-3 H-10) won two out of three duals, including a 51-30 victory over Red Oak (6-20, 3-7).
Cyclone wrestlers winning three times included Luke Musich, Bret Van Baale, Matt Schwery and Jeremiah Davis, who all notched two pins and a win by forfeit. Luke Freund, Zane Bendorf and Jesse Schwery all won by pin, forfeit and decision while Tytan Frohlich had one pin and two forfeits.
“I felt the guys put their best foot forward in this meet,” said HCHS head coach John Murtaugh. “Our conditioning is right where it needs to be for this time of the season.
“Individually, Jesse Schwery had a great meet. We moved him up to 220 pounds and he responded with a win over a quality opponent [Cal Wanninger of Kuemper]. Zane Bendorf had a nice win against a tough kid from AHSTW [Denver Pauley]. Luke Freund continues to roll as he picked up wins over two kids who are having fine seasons. I thought Luke Musich looked good as well.”
Heavyweight Jaicob Madsen and 160-pounder Garrison Gettler both went 3-0 with two pins for the Vikings while Pauley finished 2-1 with two pins at 170.
