HCHS tops Creston, 59-21

The running of junior tailback Nick Tarney and passing of senior quarterback Kyle Juhl carried Harlan to a 59-21 victory over Creston/O-M Friday night at Panther Field in a matchup of teams that came in tied for third place in Class 3A District 8.

The win pushed the Cyclones to 3-1 in district play and 6-1 overall, while Creston/O-M fell to 2-2 and 4-3.

Tarney carried 26 times for 249 yards and four touchdowns for the Cyclones. Juhl completed 13 of 17 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns, including two to wide receiver Dillon Sears, who had 86 yard on six catches.

The game was competitive for two quarters, as the Cyclones led 14-7 at the end of the first period and 24-14 at halftime. Harlan broke away with a 21-0 third quarter and took a 52-14 lead with 10:23 to play.

For the Panthers, Chase Shiltz had 162 yards rushing and a touchdown on 16 carries before leaving in the third quarter with a shoulder "stinger." Kolby Tomas picked up 79 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown in fourth quarter.

Quarterback Moritz Johannknecht completed 7 of 18 passes for 104 yards with a 40-yard touchdown to Chris Foster and one interception by Harlan's Jonathon Bieker. Shiltz had three catches for 36 yards.

The Panthers travel to district co-leader Dallas Center-Grimes next week. DC-G and Glenwood remained unbeaten in district play Friday as the Mustangs beat Winterset 42-7 and Glenwood got past ADM 27-13. Harlan, meanwhile, travels to Glenwood.
