HCHS places ninth at tough Bishop Heelan Wrestling Invitational

 SIOUX CITY (Jan. 23) -- Led by second-place finishes from Zane Bendorf, Jesse Schwery and Jeremiah Davis, Harlan Community came in ninth out of 12 teams at the Bishop Heelan Wrestling Invite last Saturday.
 Grand Island (Nebraska) led the field with 197 points and five individual champs, followed by Norfolk in second place with 177.5 points and Logan-Magnolia in third with 164. Le Mars (152.5) and West Sioux (151) rounded out the top five.
 HCHS totaled 106 points and had seven out of its 10 wrestlers earn top-8 medals.
 Bendorf (170 pounds), Schwery (195) and Davis (220) all lost by either major decision or pin in the finals but had an excellent tourney overall with a combined 8-3 record and six wins by fall. Schwery pinned his first three opponents, Bendorf had two pins and Davis had one pin to go along with close decisions of 6-3 (regulation) and 3-1 in overtime.
 Cyclone juniors Luke Freund (113) and Luke Musich (126) both placed fourth in their bracket, Bret Van Baale placed sixth at 152 and Matt Schwery was seventh at 182. They combined to win all seven of their matches by fall.
