HCHS girls rout Tigers

 HARLAN (Jan. 7) -- The Harlan Community girls shot 50 percent from the field and forced 23 steals defensively Thursday night in a 59-24 home win over Red Oak.
 The 11th-rated (Class 4A) Cyclones scored the first seven points of the game and led 24-5 after one quarter before cruising to victory behind a balanced scoring attack.
 Claire Schmitz made 7-of-9 field goals and led HCHS with 15 points, followed by Jocelyn Cheek with 11, Macie Leinen 10, Raegen Wicks seven, Brecken Van Baale and Ashley Hall with six each and Caitlyn Leinen four.
 Steal leaders were Macie Leinen with five (she also had two blocks), Wicks four and Claire Schmitz and Cheek with three apiece. Maci Schmitz grabbed a team-high five rebounds and Hall had six assists.
 The Cyclones (8-2 overall, 4-1 Hawkeye Ten) did most of their damage from two-point range on the night but did make 5-of-12 threes, led by Cheek hitting 3-of-5.
 Red Oak (1-5, 0-3) was paced by Chloe DeVries’ eight points and six boards.
