HCHS girls hit 10 treys in 30-point victory at Clarinda

 CLARINDA (Dec. 22) -- Brecken Van Baale knocked down five of Harlan Community’s 10 three-pointers Tuesday night as the 13th-ranked (4A) Cyclone girls finished December with a 64-34 win at Clarinda.
 HCHS built a 33-17 halftime advantage before outscoring the Cardinals 23-6 in the third quarter to make it a rout. The Cyclones improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in Hawkeye Ten Conference play while the Cardinals fell to 1-9 and 0-4, respectively.
 Van Baale shot 5-of-8 from beyond the arc and led HCHS with 17 points. Claire Schmitz and Jocelyn Cheek both added 13 points, Raegen Wicks scored nine off the bench (hitting 3-of-4 treys) and Macie Leinen and Caitlyn Leinen had four apiece.
 Claire Schmitz was strong on the boards with six offensive rebounds and 10 total while also blocking three shots. Wicks was the assist leader with four and also had two steals.
 Jesselee Neihart scored 20 points to lead Clarinda and Amelia Hesse had seven.
 HCHS will have two weeks off before playing at Lewis Central on January 5. Coach Zach Klaassen has been pleased by the team’s overall progress so far.
 “The effort is pretty much 100 percent all the time from whoever is out on that court," he said.
