HCHS girls hammer Clarinda, now 4-3 in H-10

Cyclones rush out to 46-8 halftime lead, block 17 shots - 10 by Macie Leinen - in 43-point win

HARLAN (Jan. 24) -- For the first time in eight games Friday night, the Harlan Community girls basketball team faced an opponent that was unranked by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and struggling for wins.
 The result was domination.
Despite a bit of a slow start offensively, HCHS was able to build a 46-8 halftime lead before finishing off Clarinda 69-26 for its second straight conference win.
The Cyclones came up with 12 steals defensively and rejected 17 Cardinal shot attempts, including 10 blocks by Macie Leinen, who also tallied nine points and eight rebounds to flirt with a triple-double.
HCHS improved to 4-3 in Hawkeye Ten Conference play (tied for fourth place) and 6-8 overall. Clarinda, which shot just 19 percent from the field (10-of-52) is now 0-7 in the H-10 and 1-14 overall.
After losing by 38 at sixth-ranked Ballard on Tuesday, HCHS coach Zach Klaassen said his players were upset and ready to go on Friday.
“Tonight we came out ready to compete again, we got out of the gates right away and it was fun to see,” he said. “What I liked seeing is the communication out there. The talking was so much better than it’s been in a while (at) both ends of the court."
Jocelyn Cheek hit a three-pointer at the end of the first quarter to make it 21-5 and Raegen Wicks beat the halftime buzzer with a trey of her own to make it 46-8. Cheek and Wicks tied for the team lead with 11 points, Ashley Hall scored 10, Macie Leinen and Brecken Van Baale scored nine each and Claire Schmitz had eight.
As a team, the Cyclones pulled down a whopping 21 offensive boards and 53 total rebounds, led by Claire Schmitz with 10 and Macie Leinen and Van Baale both with eight.
