HCHS finishes 0-5 at Valley tournament

WEST DES MOINES -- The competition was as good as advertised at Saturday’s West Des Moines Valley Marj White Volleyball Classic.
Facing five teams ranked among the top 12 in Class 5-A, Harlan Community finished 0-5 and was unable to take a set against 8th-ranked Dowling, No. 4 Valley, No. 12 Iowa City West, No. 7 Ankeny and No. 6 Cedar Rapids Kennedy. The host Tigers won the tournament with a 5-0 round-robin record, followed by Ankeny (4-1), Kennedy (3-2), Iowa City West (2-3), Dowling (1-4) and HCHS (0-5).
The Cyclones, who are ranked eighth in Class 4-A, fell to 4-7 on the season. They were competitive in some sets - including a 19-21 loss vs. Iowa City West - and parts of others, but also failed to get out of single digits in three out of 10 sets. As a team, HCHS served only seven aces in 129 attempts and averaged just 5.7 kills per set with an efficiency of .175.
