HCHS boys drain 12 treys, top Cardinals 78-60

HARLAN (Jan. 24) -- The Harlan Community boys knocked down 12-of-18 three-pointers and answered Clarinda’s stern challenge at the start of the third quarter Friday night, shooting 62.5 percent in a 78-60 conference win over the Cardinals.
Buoyed by a 26-12 first quarter, HCHS led by as many as 19 points in the first half before Clarinda outscored the Cyclones 15-8 to start the third and twice cut a 16-point halftime margin to nine.
The home team responded with a 14-2 run, however, and was in control the rest of the way, improving to 9-3 overall and 7-0 in the Hawkeye Ten - still tied for first place with Lewis Central.
The Cardinals, who made 10-of-26 threes and shot 52 percent, fell to 7-7 overall and 1-7 in league games.
“It was a good win," said HCHS coach Mitch Osborn. Clarinda has got a nice ball club. They’re the same size as us and they can shoot it, but we got out of the gate and that made it hard for them to come back. We just kept that cushion... but they never quit. We needed all 78 points tonight, that’s for sure.”
With starting forward Connor Frame out sick, sophomore Will McLaughlin and freshman Aidan Hall stepped up with big games for the Cyclones.
Drawing his first varsity start, McLaughlin made his presence felt inside right away, crashing the boards, contesting shots and scoring six early points. He finished with eight points, nine rebounds (five offensive) and three blocks. Hall provided a scoring punch off the bench with a career-high 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting. He was aggressive off the dribble and able to finish shots in traffic.
Three Cyclone seniors also scored in double figures. Johnathan Monson tallied 18 points, nine boards and five assists, Connor Bruck had 16 points and seven boards and Michael Heithoff had a big second half to finish with 15 points, six assists and five rebounds.
