HCHS’s Obrecht wins three matches in quad

Despite low numbers for the HCHS Cyclones girls wrestling team, one Cyclone stood out in a big way. Senior Addison Obrecht won three matches during Thursday’s quad that featured Logan-Magnolia, Tri-Center, and Ridge View.

“I’m super proud of these girls,” said Cyclone Head Coach Tarah Devlin-Lawler. “I always tell them not to look at the team score because we don’t have a full team. We only competed with six girls last night. Each one of them wrestled the best that they could and we had some really intense competition.”

During that match against Logan-Magnolia, Obrecht wrestled Karter Springston beating her in a technical fall at 2:48. Elle Stephens picked up a win defeating Gracyn Stone with a pin at 3:48.

“These girls go out and leave everything out on the mat and that’s all we can ask,” Devlin-Lawler said. “They literally leave their heart and everything on the mat. They do the best they can. Elle had a tough competitor against Ridge View, but was able to bounce back and beat the girl from Logan-Magnolia. For her to be able to adjust that quickly, it’s nice to see the girls bounce back after a tough loss.”

Against Tri-Center, Obrecht picked up another victory beating Trista McMullen with a pin at 35 seconds. Senior Kyrsten Madden was able to pick up a victory against Olivia Bandow with a pin at 3:10 after dropping her other matches.

“That was a great win for Kyrsten,” Devlin-Lawler added. “That was a must needed win for her. She’s been working her tail off. She was finally able to get a win and I think that was good for her moral and the moral of our team.”

Despite a tough outing against Ridge View, one Cyclone was able to pick up a victory in Obrecht pinning Lynsee Ockerman at 1:12.

“Addison came out and was ready to go,” Devlin-Lawler said. “She wrestled her little heart out and was able to do some things that she’s been working on in practice and they all started to come together and work well for her.”

Cyclone lady grapplers finish 10th at weekend tournament

Saturday, the HCHS Cyclones girls wrestling team competed at West Central Valley High School taking home a 10th place finish out of 15 teams with 54 points, 110.5 behind Riverside, who won with 164.5.

“I’m super proud of these girls,” said Cyclone Head Coach Tarah Devlin-Lawyer. “To go compete with five individuals and come away with 10th place is a huge accomplishment and it just shows how well they’ve been working and how hard they’ve been working.”

Addison Obrecht came away with three victories. She won her quarterfinals win over Ashley Hardy of Shenandoah pinning her in 19 seconds. She beat Nevaeh Chesnut of Creston in a consolation semifinal match with a pin at 54 seconds, along with a 3:02 victory over Shin Byrd of Central Decatur by way of a pin.

“She’s really starting to develop into a really great wrestler,” Devlin-Lawler said. “Having her bring some fun into the matches has been awesome to see, and having her come off the match and say how much fun she’s having is a huge victory for her.”

Elle Stephens also picked up two victories. One of them came against Isabell Hay of Clarke with a pin at 1:04. Her other victory was over Karlie Kruse of Creation in a 9-7 decision.

“She went out and was ready to go,” Devlin-Lawler added. “She’s an amazing wrestler. She has a lot of skill and a lot of talent and is fun to watch.”

After receiving a bye, Kyrsten Madden picked up two victories with pins. One of them came against Bailey Trogdon of Martensdale-St Marys, and the other victory was over Anna Schuette of Kuemper Catholic.

“She was talking about her plan for the match and slowing herself down a little bit and staying comfortable within the match,” Devlin-Lawler said. “She went out and had a lot of fun. It was really great to see just a boost in her confidence over the weekend.”

The Cyclones will be back on the mat Saturday at Sidney High School where they will be one of 12 schools competing.

“We’re going to go on Saturday and face some new teams that the girls haven’t seen yet,” Devlin-Lawler added. “As long as they go out and they’re confident in themselves, I have the upmost confidence in these girls they will do well.”
