Comments from Head Coach Sam Brummer
“Fourteen entries at state (in 2019) was quite the accomplishment and this year’s team was going to push for that number... We could have come out with a lot of points in the field events... The 400 would have been the crown jewel race in southwest Iowa. Michael Erlemeier was poised for a record-breaking year being pushed by the competition around him. Michael also had a chance to be a Drake Relays qualifier in three events this year - 400, long jump and 4x400 - which is quite the impressive feat as a junior.
“Since I have taken over (in 2014), we have prided ourselves in having a strong 4x4 team by evidence of our Drake qualifiers and state medalists. This year would have added to that tradition with a strong projected lineup. Many combinations of kids would have contended for a state title.
“While we are deeply saddened not being able to compete for an H-10 title and adding to the state track banners in the gym, most of our projected lineup will be returning next spring. We cannot express enough to the class of 2020 and our four seniors - Allen Fries, Kobe Livengood, Thomas Frederick and Johnathan Monson - our sympathy on how their senior years ended. It was supposed to end in Des Moines at Drake Stadium with the sun shining and Mike Jay announcing your name over the loudspeaker turning the final corner. As in most times of hardship there is a silver lining, and for this case it is with the underclassmen to never waste an opportunity to compete in Cyclone Red. You will have the rest of your adult life to work, so do everything you want to or can do in your time at HCHS; for once it is gone, it is gone forever. The Class of 2020 will be an example of that, for if given a chance what they wouldn’t give to end their high school careers on their own terms.”

Additional Team Strengths (according to Brummer)
Field Events: Allen Fries, Jameson Bieker and Will McLaughlin in the shot put and discus; Michael Erlemeier and Aidan Hall in the long jump. Hall broke HCMS long jump record last year.
Sprint Medley: Rotation of guys such as Mason Griffith, Jacob and Jordan Schechinger, Johnathan Monson, Hall and Erlemeier.
3,200 and 1,600: Trey Gross, Reed Boardman and Brennon Munch - strong potential for double points in both events.
4x800: Thomas Frederick setting the tone along with the Schechingers, Boardman, Munch and Kaiden Milliken.
Shuttle Hurdle: Joseph Fah returned from 10th place state meet squad; to be joined by Garrett Assmann, Bret Van Baale and Kemper Gorden. These four had real potential in 110 highs and 400 lows as well.
Distance Medley: Strong potential with many names listed above.
4x200 Relay: Griffith, Brenden Bartley, Monson and Hall.
800: Frederick, Jacob Schechinger, Jordan Schechinger.
