Comments from Head Coach Dave Voge
“What could have been? Where do I start? There was so much potential for the HCHS boys soccer team for this 2020 season! With the team coming so close to state the last three seasons - 2019 substate final loss to eventual Class 2A state champion Lewis Central, who had moved down to 2A; 2018 substate final loss to Perry after dominating the first half; and 2017 substate semifinal loss to Winterset, who made it to state - the expectations were extremely high to say the least.
“The HCHS Cyclone boys soccer team would have featured a 13 senior-heavy roster of 40 with many very talented underclassmen. The team had 14 returning lettermen and most of them had significant varsity playing time over the last two and even three years. The team also had the following achievements the last three seasons: 2017 and 2019 Hawkeye Ten Conference tri-champions with Lewis Central and Denison-Schleswig; 2018 Hawkeye Ten Conference runner-up to Lewis Central; Winterset and Atlantic Tournament championship trophies; numerous IAHSSCA All-State players, IAHSSCA Academic All-State players, Hawkeye 10 All-Conference 1st Team, 2nd Team and Honorable Mention players; HCHS school-record 16 wins in a season; and a total three-year record of 45 wins and only 14 losses. Not bad. Not bad at all.
“I would like to express my sincere appreciation for what Coach Pat Shelton, Coach Logan Maxwell and Coach Shane Conrad have done for this team. They have been an integral part in the success of the boys soccer program over the last several years. Their passion for not only soccer but the success of the team members on and off the field is a tribute to their character. I am very proud to coach with these fine men!
“The seniors, their parents and families have a very special place in my heart. This is the last big group of seniors that I have coached many since the 1st and 2nd grade. We have shared a few heartbreaking losses along the way, but have experienced many more exhilarating victories and successes on and off the field. I want to thank the seniors and their families for all of their support over the last 10-plus years! These young men have left a legacy that will last for years. Their dedication to the sport of soccer and off-field focus on academics and helping others has set a good example for the underclassmen. I want them to know that we coaches will be here for them if needed after they graduate. We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them and their families over the years and know they will become successful in whatever they decide to do after high school. We will miss you all very much and wish you the best in the future!”
