Grace Porter makes history for AHSTW

Senior Grace Porter of AHSTW made history recently when she recorded her 1,000th dig during a playoff volleyball game against the IKM-Manning Wolves. Porter was quick to credit her teammates for this accomplishment.

“I set this goal at the beginning of the season,” Porter said. “I wasn't sure if it was attainable, but it was always in the back of my mind. This was a goal I always wanted after seeing Paige Osweiler achieve it. I could never have done it without my teammates.”

The Vikings volleyball season got cut short when they dropped three sets in a row to the Missouri Valley Lady Reds in the Class 2A Region 3 Quarterfinal game on the road. But that doesn’t take away from the accomplishment made by Porter. During her time playing volleyball, Porter has some fond memories that stand out.

“I have made lots of memories playing volleyball with AHSTW and club,” she said. “Making many good friends along the way. My junior year we won in five sets over Riverside, which was an exciting and memorable game.”

But the love for volleyball goes back to her childhood days as Porter fell in love with the sport at a young age.

“I started playing volleyball in the third grade at the NACC in Neola,” Porter added. “All my coaches growing up made the sport enjoyable.”

Throughout this journey, Porter is grateful for the life lessons volleyball has taught her along the way and credits her head coach Kelsey Muxfeldt.

“Sports will always be an important part of my life, they have taught me the importance of teamwork, putting in the time during the offseason, and getting along with others,” Porter said. “It’s also taught me work ethic, discipline and skills. [Coach] Muxfeldt cares for each athlete on and off the court. Coach Muxfeldt and I had a great relationship this year as she encouraged me throughout the season and trusted me as a player on the court.”

With her time at high school coming to an end, Porter is undecided on her future, but the sky is the limit as she can do whatever she chooses if she pursues it.

“I am undecided on my future plans, but enjoying the college visits,” she said.
