Gettler, Fischer advance for AHSTW

Viking wrestlers place fourth as a team at Class 1A sectional in Oakland

 OAKLAND (Feb. 6) -- AHSTW juniors Garrison Gettler and Hayden Fischer kept their seasons alive on Saturday by placing first or second in the Class 1A, Sectional 13 Wrestling Tournament held at Riverside High School.
 Gettler (30-5) was the sectional champion at 160 pounds after outlasting Cole Lange of Missouri Valley 6-4 in the finals.
 Fischer (20-7) was the 132-pound runner-up to Underwood’s Gable Porter. He won his first two matches 17-2 and 4-2 before being pinned by Porter in the championship match.
 Gettler and Fischer will now compete at Saturday’s 12 p.m. District 7 Tournament at Underwood, needing another top-two finish to qualify for the state meet.
 AHSTW scored 143.5 points and finished fourth out of seven teams in the sectional standings. Missouri Valley won the meet with 237 points and advanced eight wrestlers to districts, also qualifying for regional duals with their first-place effort. Underwood (172.5) and Riverside (162.5) rounded out the top three.
 AHSTW had 13 wrestlers compete Saturday and nine won at least one match.
 Third-place finishers included David Johnson at 126 pounds, Isaac Stamp at 145, Denver Pauley at 170 and Quintin Martin at 220. All four lost in the semifinals and won their third-place match, but only Stamp was afforded the opportunity at a wrestleback match for true second place. He was pinned by West Central Valley’s Blaise Beane in 1:04.
 Fourth-place Vikings were Clayton Johnson at 106 and Aidan Martin at 152. Eli Collins (113) and Sawyer Kiesel (285) both won their fifth-place matches.
