Four Cyclones qualify for state meet

Cyclone grapplers Brody McKinley, Brody Bendorf, Jesse Jens, and Chayton Snethen have punched their ticket to the state wrestling meet in Des Moines at Wells Fargo Arena after a strong showing at the district meet at Glenwood High School.
“I couldn’t be more proud,” said Cyclone Head Coach Adam Bendorf. “All four did what they needed to do on Saturday and got it done.”
Spencer Fink, Nathan Sandquist, Coy Obrecht, Jamison Clark, Jaden Stephens, and Austin Spray were all able to pick up individual victories despite not making it to state.
“Spencer Fink, it’s definitely a hard thing for him,” Bendorf said. “He’s been to state before and for senior year not being able to go is a tough thing to take, but he’s a tough kid and he’ll be fine. He had a tough bracket.”
Fink’s three wins came against Christian Lopez of Glenwood in the 120 weight class via a technical fall, he won over Camden Whipp of Clarinda with a pin at 1:15, and he beat Bowen Page of Clarke in a technical fall.
Sandquist pinned Angel Gomez-Perez of Clarke at 1:17 in the 106 weight class. Obrecht pinned Mark Reed of Glenwood in the 132 class with a pin at the 4-minute mark, along with Landon Gibbs of Red Oak in a sudden victory 11-8.
Clark earned one win defeating Emmett Comer of Clarinda in the 138 weight class in a quick pin at 28 seconds. Stephens beat Roland Hinman of Atlantic in the 165 weight class with a pin approaching 3 1/2 minutes on the mat.
Spray earned his win over Angel Torres of Clarke in the 285 weight class with a pin at 1:29.
Bendorf is looking forward to watching his four Cyclones compete at Wells Fargo Arena.
“The energy there can be a little overwhelming, especially the first time you go,” Bendorf said. “Jesse and Brody [McKinley] have both been there before and so I’m hoping they’ll feel comfortable when they get there and perform at their best. Jesse, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him the finals. He’s just firing on all pistons and doing super well.”
