First signs of fall at Harlan Community

Attendance high for HCHS preseason football and volleyball camps

HARLAN (Aug. 6) -- With a hopeful eye toward playing full seasons this fall, the Harlan Community football and volleyball teams held preseason camps this week in preparation for the start of practices on Monday, Aug. 10.
The annual Cyclone Football Camp of Champions is taking place Monday-Friday. Approximately 80 players (20 freshmen) are attending the high school camp in the morning while 40-50 players are attending the 7th-8th grade camp in the afternoon.
The HCHS Volleyball Camp was held Monday-Wednesday with grades 9-12 meeting each morning and grades 7-8 practicing in the afternoon. Camp attendance included 35 high schoolers and 30 middle school players.
So far, all of Iowa’s fall sports are set to take place during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic even as some states, including Minnesota, have moved some or all of their high school fall sports to the spring.
HCHS is planning to hold its preseason intrasquad football scrimmage on Thursday, August 20, at Merrill Field and is slated to host Grinnell in the season opener on Aug. 28.
The Cyclones return 20 varsity letter winners, six all-district players and a first team all-stater in Will McLaughlin from last year’s team, which qualified for the playoffs as a Class 3A, District 9 tri-champion and finished 7-3 overall.
The HCHS volleyball team, meanwhile, returns eight varsity letter winners and two all-conference players (Ashley Hall and Lauren Andersen) from last year’s 12-27 squad, which finished 5-5 inside the Hawkeye Ten.
The Cyclones will open the season at the ADM Invite (varsity and JV) on Thursday, Aug. 27, and will host the Cyclone Tournament two days later.
