Fink collects 100th career win at Hawkeye Ten Meet

Cyclone wrestlers Nathan Sandquist, Spencer Fink, Jesse Jens, Coy Obrecht, Brody McKinley, Chayton Snethen, Jaden Stephens and Brody Bendorf picked up victories at Saturday’s Hawkeye Ten wrestling meet in Denison.

“I think we competed well,” Fink said. “The team is really pushing in practice right now with districts in two weeks.”

Sandquist earned two wins on the day in the 106 weight class beating Don Elderbaum of Lewis Central, pinning him in just 37 seconds, along with another pin in 27 seconds over Aiden Gaul of St. Albert.

Fink lost a match in the 120 weight class to Braxton Hass of Atlantic with Hass pinning him at 1:13.

“I walked into my first match not knowing what was going to happen,” he said. “I could tell I wasn’t awake yet, but that match woke me up. The next three matches I knew I had to get the business done if I wanted to hit my 100th that day.”

However, he was able to pick up three victories including his 100th career win that he earned against Kylen Parsons of Creston with a fall at 1:57.

“It’s a milestone that I’ve always wanted to hit,” he added. “I set a couple of goals at the beginning of the year and that was one of them and now I’m chasing the other one. That starts next week in Glenwood.”

Jens won three matches in the 126 weight class against Brody Pellett of St. Albert, Owen Duffek of Lewis Central, and Dayton Gusman of Red Oak. He pinned Pellett at 2:42, he earned a 4-0 decision victory of Duffek, and he defeated Gusman by way of a major decision, 10-0.

Obrecht picked up two victories in the 132 weight class pinning Owen Nepple of Kuemper Catholic once at 1:24 and his other victory resulted in a 10-4 decision.

McKinley’s two wins were against Andy Alvarenga and Sam Raymond in the 150 weight class. He pinned both of them at 1:00 and 2:35.

Snethen won two matches in the 157 weight class against Enrique Santos of Denison in a pin at 3:41, along with a technical fall victory at 3:12 against Barrett Hagey of Clarinda. Stephens earned two wins in the 165 weight class against Alex Graeve of Lewis Central and Javier Medina of Denison. He pinned Graeve at 3:57 and he beat Medina in a tiebreaker 17-15.

Bendorf came away with three victories in the 175 weight class winning against Nate Bentley of Creston with a pin at 1:10, Anthony Arita of Denison, pinning him at 1:01, and a pin victory at 2:23 against Bently in a third place match.

The Cyclones return to the mat Thursday at the Logan-Magnolia Round Robin event where they will be one of four schools, along with West Monona and MVAOCOU.

“It’s great that we have the chance to pick these three duals up for extra matches,” Fink said. “Going about a week and a half with no matches straight into districts is kind of hard, so these matches will hopefully motivate us as we go into districts strong and tough.”
