Ernst dominates in game one; Cyclones drop game two late

The rain was coming down, but that didn’t stop the HCHS varsity baseball team from being a force to reckon with as they cruised to a 9-1 victory in game one of their doubleheader behind starting pitcher Braydon Ernst over the St. Albert Falcons.

“Braydon was outstanding again,” said HCHS Head Baseball Coach Heath Stein. “Just attacking hitters, no free bases. Things we’ve talked about, Braydon does and he’s going to continue to do.”

Ernst currently has an earned run average of 0.38 with 21 strikeouts on the season and four wins.

During game one, four players for the Cyclones each had two hits, including seniors Joey Moser and Alex Monson as well as juniors Teagon Kasperbauer and Stephen Leinen.

However, the Cyclones were not as fortunate in game two of their doubleheader as they let one slip away by losing 16-14 to the Falcons, including allowing five runs to score in the fifth inning and seven runs to score in the sixth inning.

“That was like the epitome of things that you can’t do to win a ballgame,” Stein said. “We walked 15 guys, we gave away 25 free bases. Even if you’re a more talented team than the other team, if you do that and hand them bases and runs, then it’s going to come back and beat you.”

With these two games behind them, the Cyclones won’t rest for long as they will get ready for two games on Saturday against the Sergeant Bluff-Luton Warriors, 10-5-1, and the Carlisle Wildcats, 8-6. Stein emphasized the importance of guys getting rest before these games.

“Our pitching staff is pretty deep,” he added. “Some time off a little bit will be all right for us.”
