Dowling girls stop Cyclone winning streak at 52

Maroons prevail, 56-54, as Frederick’s last-second 3-pointer narrowly off the mark

HARLAN -- Had the final shot fallen, it would have been a pretty sweet way to extend a remarkable winning streak to 53 games.
But alas, Taylor Frederick’s 26-foot jumper at the final horn was narrowly off the mark Tuesday night, allowing Dowling Catholic to edge Harlan Community 56-54 in a well-played battle of large-school girls basketball titans.
HCHS, which turned a 14-point first-half deficit into a 50-45 lead with 4:26 to go, was unable to hold off the Becca Hittner-led Maroons down the stretch, suffering its first defeat since a one-point setback in the 2013 state championship game.
After Frederick tied the score on a pair of free throws with 1:31 remaining, Dowling held for one shot and scored the winning points on senior Marin Daniel’s clutch baseline jumper with :02.3 left.
The Cyclones executed a perfect out-of-bounds play - Bailey Hansen lofting a baseball pass to midcourt and Jordyn Moser finding Frederick near the left sideline - but Frederick’s long, contested 3-pointer bounced off the rim as time expired.
