Daeges joins IHSBCA Hall of Fame

HCHS baseball coach has won 579 games, two state titles in first 22 seasons

WEST DES MOINES -- Hired to direct the Harlan Community baseball program in 1994, Steve Daeges never imagined the type of success that would follow.
Twenty-two seasons and 579 wins later, he’s a hall of famer.
On Saturday night, January 23, at the Sheraton Hotel in West Des Moines, Daeges was honored as one of five new inductees into the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The association’s 48th annual Awards Banquet capped its two-day clinic and honored coaches, umpires and media from across the state.
In addition to Daeges, a 1972 Harlan Community graduate, this year’s Hall of Fame class included Casey Blake (Indianola) and Jeff Clement (Marshalltown), both former Major League Baseball players, along with coaches Tim O’Neill (Bishop Heelan, Dowling Catholic) and Jeff Scharn of Sioux Central.
Daeges was supported at the banquet by his wife Sue and oldest son Matt, along with his varsity coaching staff, local media members and several former players.
