Cyclones take 2 of 3 in final tuneup before districts

Thursday, the HCHS Cyclones boys wrestling team competed in the Logan-Magnolia Round Robin event featuring three other schools, and managed to come away with two wins and one loss. The Cyclones beat MVAOCOU 48-18, and West Monana-Whiting 39-33, but lost to Logan-Magnolia 58-21.

“I felt like a few of them did well,” said Cyclone Head Coach Adam Bendorf. “A couple of them, I was a little disappointed. I was hoping to see some wins where we didn’t quite fall through. That’s wrestling through. You’re going to have some good days and bad days. Otherwise I think we’re ready to go for districts.”

However, multiple Cyclones came away with individual victories including Brody McKinley, Jesse Jens, Chayton Snethen, Austin Spray, Nathan Sandquist, Jamison Clark, and Brody Bendorf.

During their match against MVAOCOU, McKinley pinned Erik Bailey at 41 seconds in the 150 weight class. Jens beat Brayton Paterson with a fall at 1:26 in the 126 weight class.

“Brody, sometimes he just comes out and is aggressive and get things done,” Bendorf said. “He does well when he’s got his mind to it, that’s for sure.”

Against West Monona-Whiting, Snethen defeated Keegan Wiggs via a 6-3 decision in the 157 weight class. Spray picked up a victory over Jakob Brewer with a pin at 1:45 in the 285 weight class. Sandquist had a quick match pinning Bentley Yanak in 19 seconds in the 106 weight class, along with Jamison Clark picking up a win over Kaleb Crosgrove with a fall at 26 seconds in the 138 weight class.

“He [Spray] definitely had a good night,” Bendorf added. “He went out and wrestled well. He was aggressive and worked for it and got it. He earned it.”

In the Logan-Magnolia match, Jens won a match in an 11-4 decision Max Wingert in the 126 weight class. Snethen defeated Robert Bothwell in the 157 weight class by way of a pin at 3:32. Brody Bendorf came away with a victory over Macklin Loftus in the 175 weight class, pinning him in under a minute at 54 seconds. Spray got another victory in the 285 weight class over Grady Brix, pinning him at 2:53.

“Brody is one that typically goes out every match and wrestles hard and puts his heart into it,” Bendorf said. “He hates to lose. He goes out there and work hard and sometimes guys are just better than him. He’s improving so I hope for big things from him.”

The Cyclones next meet will be Saturday at their district meet at Glenwood High School featuring seven other schools.

“I was telling the boys yesterday that I feel like we’re pretty well prepared,” he said. “We’ve been conditioning pretty hard. Overall, our injuries are there, but not terrible, and so I think we’re in a good spot this time of year. Regardless of how prepared you are, you never know how it’s going to go. You let things work out how they work out and you’ve got to be okay with it.”
