Cyclones show late spark in H-10 triangular defeats

Highly-ranked Saintes, Rams both sweep Cyclones

COUNCIL BLUFFS (Oct. 5) -- It was another tough night in the win-loss column, but Harlan Community may have found something to build on during the late stages of Tuesday’s Hawkeye Ten volleyball triangular at St. Albert.
The Cyclones were swept by the eighth-ranked (1A) Saintes in the opening match 15-25, 22-25, 15-25, then lost to fifth-ranked (4A) Glenwood 15-25, 15-25, 21-25. The Rams finished things off with a 25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 25-18 win over St. Albert to remain unbeaten in conference play.
It was in their sixth and final set that the Cyclones picked up their level of intensity and execution before ultimately losing for the sixth straight time inside the Hawkeye Ten.
Diving saves and other hustle plays were common as HCHS turned a 10-7 deficit into leads of 15-12, 16-13, and 18-15 vs. the talented Rams. Glenwood got the lead back at 21-19 on kills by Kennedy Jones and Charley Hernandez and took advantage of Cyclone errors the rest of the way to finish off a sweep.
The Cyclones entered Thursday’s match at Clarinda with a record of 12-16 overall and 2-6 in the Hawkeye Ten. They will play at least five matches at Saturday’s Western Christian Tournament in Hull (Oct. 9) before closing out the regular season at home Tuesday night (Oct. 12) vs. Creston.
Head coach Elle Crees was adament that HCHS can take something positive away from Tuesday’s finish as it enters the home stretch of the regular season.
“That last set was probably some of the best volleyball we’ve played all year,” Crees said. “The girls were mentally tough, they hung with good competition and we were (making) plays that I didn’t know we could (make), honestly, at this point. I’ve always believed we could, but we were doing it and now that’s the standard. It’s good to set that standard and know that we have even more potential to reach.”
Errors - both passing and hitting - continued to plague the Cyclones at times and they also managed just three ace serves in six sets while allowing 16.
Glenwood improved to 27-5 overall and 8-0 in the Hawkeye Ten. The 1-1 split left St. Albert at 15-11 and 5-2, respectively.
