Cyclones perform strong in Atlantic

On Wednesday, the HCHS girls varsity tennis team competed at Atlantic High School to try and secure a spot for state as individuals.

“Scarlett McGuinness and Sydney Jones competed in the singles competition,” said HCHS Head Tennis Coach Katie Arentson. “This was a very exciting and nerve racking match to watch. You must win by two, and the girls battled back and forth until Sydney finally came out on top with a 14-12 win. There were some great points and both played very well.”

When the girls played doubles matches, they were not quite as fortunate.

“On the doubles side of the tournament, we had a rough start to the day for Alli Owens and Sammy Swensen,” she said. “Unfortunately Alli was not feeling well, and even though she was physically sick she battled through the first round of play.”

Later on in the day, the tables turned in their favor as the girls managed to come away with a victory.

“The final competitors of the day were Erica Rust and Grace Coenen in the doubles bracket,” she added. “Rust and Coenen played exceptionally well in their first round against Atlantic. They came through the first round with a 6-2, 6-3 win.”

Their next match will take place on Saturday at Atlantic High School at 9 a.m. in the Class 1A - Region 2 First Round.

“We will use what we learned today to help us compete on Saturday as a team to try and advance to the state competition,” she said. “Hopefully we can put on a strong showing and come away with a victory.”
