Cyclones get shut down by Huskies at home

The HCHS boys varsity basketball team ran into a buzzsaw Monday night, falling to the Winterset Huskies, 66-52.

“We ran into a very, very hot shooting team,” said Cyclones Head Coach Mitch Osborn. “Winterset is definitely capable of that. They were on fire. They had seven 3’s at the half. I think they had seven or eight the second half.”

The Huskies opened the game scoring the first points of the night, taking a commanding 21-10 lead into the second half, with the Cyclones struggling offensively.

The second quarter opened with Junior Franz Reisz getting fouled on a made shot, sending him to the line, where he made the extra point, putting his team within eight points of the Huskies.

The wheels of the Cyclones looked like they were starting to turn a little more when Senior Teagon Kasperbauer made a shot from 3-point range, putting the Cyclones down only six.

With halftime approaching, Junior Will Arkfeld made a shot just before the buzzer, putting the Cyclones within striking distance, down by seven points heading into the locker room. Reisz was the Cyclones leading scorer with nine points at the half, while Senior Huskie Brayden Dinkla was leading with 12.

“Give Winterset a lot of credit,” Osborn said. “It was tough to come back because they shot the ball so stinking well. We gave up too much penetration against Dinkla. He’s a right-handed guy that goes left. You scout him, but we only had about 60 minutes to prep for him.”

The Huskies took the dominance into the third quarter, going on a 5-0 run that forced Osborn to call a timeout. The timeout didn’t affect the Huskies much, allowing them to take a double-digit lead into the final quarter.

The Cyclones were hoping for a few runs in the fourth quarter to get back in the game when Senior Jacob Birch was fouled just under five minutes left in regulation, where he made 1 of 2 free throws, but in the end, the Huskies cruised to victory, winning their second game in a row and handing the Cyclones their fifth loss of the season.

The Cyclones next game will be back at home Friday night against the 9-8 Lewis Central Titans, whom have won two games in a row. The Titans are led by Junior Nash Paulson with 235 points, Senior Colby Souther with 131 rebounds and Junior Curtis Witte with 71 assists.

“It just was a tough night tonight,” Osborn said. “We have no time to feel sorry for ourselves. Lewis Central comes here Friday, that’s a conference game. There’s no easy games coming up. We have got to keep improving."
