Cyclones finish strong at State Qualifying Meet

It was hot and humid at Denison High School for the State Qualifying Track Meet, but the HCHS girls varsity track and field team came out strong and performed well.

“The girls were on a mission today and did a great job of not letting the heat and the wind distract them,” said HCHS Head Track and Field Coach Jennifer Hamilton. “On the track, we had a unique lineup that we believed would give us the best opportunity to accomplish our goals including qualifying several events for state in a position to be competitive.”

Hamilton acknowledged athletes on her roster that had standout performances.

“Lindsey Sonderman ran an extremely intelligent and gutsy 3000,” she said. “Kaia Bieker had a full plate with three 800s and a 400. A lot went into this decision, and Kaia was, of course, up for the challenge. Her focus and execution in each race was impressive, but not surprising.”

With the State Qualifying Meet behind them, they will now turn their attention to the State Qualifiers that will start Thursday. The Cyclones have multiple girls that will represent them.

“Now that all State Qualifying Meets have been completed, we are delighted for Abby [Broeckelman] to qualify for the 400 hurdles by time,” she added. “We are so proud of these girls in not only how they compete and approach competition, but also for how they carry themselves with such character and humility.”
