Cyclones finish off Falcons for H-10 win

COUNCIL BLUFFS (Jan. 20) -- Outside of some shaky free throw shooting, Monday’s fourth quarter at St. Albert was largely stress free by Harlan Community standards.
No last-second shots were required. No big rallies or blown leads.
On this night, the Cyclone boys took control with a 9-0 third-quarter run and also outscored the Falcons 11-1 in the fourth, holding the home team without a made field goal for the last 12 minutes of a 56-32 conference win.
HCHS, which trailed only once at 2-0, built a 32-17 halftime lead and responded well after St. Albert opened the third with an 11-2 spurt to make it a six-point game. Michael Heithoff and Will McLaughlin combined to score the next 12 Cyclone points and Harlan continued to pull away despite making only 5-of-12 fourth-quarter free throws.
The Cyclones improved to 6-0 in the Hawkeye Ten - tied with Lewis Central for first place - and 8-2 overall. The Falcons saw their five-game winning streak come to an end, falling to 2-4 in league play and 5-6 overall.
“That was a great win to get on the road,” said HCHS coach Mitch Osborn. “We had to really grind it out. That was not our A+ game at the offensive end by any means. It was about a C."
Osborn was pleased with the Cyclones’ 44-37 rebounding advantage as well as the effectiveness of a diamond-and-one defense employed much of the game to lock up Falcon leading scorer Sam Rallis, who attempted only six shots (5-of-6) and totaled 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Point guard Connor Bruck scored 11 of his game-high 16 points in the first half for the Cyclones and also dished out three assists. Heithoff finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, Connor Frame had eight points and five boards and McLaughlin added seven points, six rebounds and two blocks. Monson (4 points) crashed the boards for 17 rebounds (six offensive) and also had three assists and three steals.
