Cyclones finish 7th at 3A girls regional golf

DENISON -- The Harlan Community girls golf team finished the season with a seventh-place performance out of 12 schools at the Class 3A, Region 1 Tournament held May 24 at Majestic Hills Golf Course in Denison.
State-qualifying teams were first-place Gilbert with an impressive score of 357 and second-place Nevada with a 400. Gilbert was led by the freshmen combo of Eden Lohrbach and Macy Underwood, who placed first and second, respectively, with 18-hole rounds of 77 and 83.
The top two teams and top six individuals advanced to the 3A State Tournament set for June 1-2 in Adel.
HCHS tallied a team score of 438 in the regional final, finishing 38 strokes out of state meet contention.
Jocelyn Cheek, who earned medalist honors several times during an excellent senior year, tied for 21st in the field with a 107. She shot a 48 on the front nine before fading with a 59 on the back half. Cyclone sophomore Timber Svendsen also had a 107 on the day (50-57) while freshman Ella Freund shot a 108 (54-54). HCHS also counted freshman Kara Kenkel’s 116 (55-61).
“Not the results we were looking for, but we grinded through a tough, windy day on a tough course,” stated HCHS coach Willie Baughman. “These girls have lots to be proud of as we continued to get better as the year went along and (were) playing our best golf the last part of the season.”
