Cyclones bounce back with home win over Falcons

Senior Brad Curren scored 26 points in Friday’s home victory over the St. Albert Falcons to give the Cyclones their sixth win of the season.

“It was a good one to bounce back after that Lewis Central game that was a really rough game,” Curren said. “To come out and get this win, it felt good.”

The Cyclones got off to a dominant start with Curren dropping the first eight points of the game that forced Falcons head coach Larry Peterson to call his first timeout of the night.

The timeout didn’t affect the Cyclones as they cruised to a 15-0 run before Freshman Nicholas Ballenger dropped their first bucket. The quarter came to an end with the Cyclones leading in dominant fashion, 26-8.

In the second quarter, the Falcons fought back against the Cyclones cutting their lead to 10 points heading into the locker room.

“We just said we got to make sure we get better shots,” said Cyclones Head Coach Mitch Osborn. “We thought we were rushing some shots. Basically, we wanted to adjust, we wanted the ball and get more touches inside to Franz [Reisz], which you could see the second half we did.”

Reisz had five points at halftime and got his team going, dropping the first bucket while getting fouled 11 seconds into the third quarter that put the Cyclones up by 13. The Falcons came back with two buckets of their own forcing Osborn to call a timeout.

Soon after, the Cyclones started dropping buckets again going on a 22-11 run to end the third quarter and put the Cyclones up by 12.

With just over five minutes remaining in the final quarter, Reisz got fouled on a shot and went to the line to add the extra point, which put the Cyclones up 22 points.

Before long, the Cyclones celebrated their bounce back victory winning 80-64. Head coach Mitch Osborn credited his guys for the team effort that led them to victory.

“We shot the ball well tonight, no doubt about it,” he said. “Teagon Kasperbauer had 10 assists, Jacob Birch with another double-double. I thought Will Arkfeld had some good minutes for us tonight. Jozef gave us good minutes. I thought Jace Gubbels had a real nice game. Everybody really contributed and it was a good solid win.”

The Cyclones will turn their attention to the Glenwood Rams on the road Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. as the Rams look to get even with the Cyclones after Harlan beat them 62-57 on their court.

The Rams have won five games in a row with their most recent victory coming against the Shenandoah Mustangs, 88-32.

“They’re undefeated at home right now, so it’s going to be a tough one,” Curren said. “I love playing at Glenwood. It’s a tough place to play, but that’s what makes it fun though. It’s a great atmosphere and they’re a good team.”

The Rams are led Seniors Risto Lappala with 127 points, Logyn Eckheart with 85 rebounds and Caden Johnson with 77 assists.
